Saudi Arabia - Health & Education - Kamel Ghribi Interview

"Saudi Arabia represents one of the most strategic healthcare markets globally as it combines vision, scale, and a commitment to innovation.”"

TBY talks to Kamel Ghribi, Chairman of GKSD Holding, about the group’s integrated approach to healthcare development in Saudi Arabia, the role of public-private partnerships in advancing Vision 2030, and GKSD’s ambition to build world-class healthcare ecosystems across the Middle East.

What makes Saudi Arabia such a compelling market for healthcare investment today?

Saudi Arabia is undertaking one of the most ambitious healthcare transformations globally as part of Vision 2030. The Kingdom is not only expanding its healthcare infrastructure but also redefining how healthcare systems operate by embracing innovation, digitalisation, and integrated models of care. The most compelling opportunities lie in three strategic areas: advanced medical infrastructure, the integration of digital healthcare technologies, and the development of medical education and research capacity. Through GKSD, in synergy with the clinical excellence of Gruppo San Donato (GSD) and our international platform Hospital Healthcare Holdings (HHH), we combine medical expertise, infrastructure development, and long-term investment capacity. This integrated model allows us to support healthcare systems not only through facilities, but through knowledge transfer, innovation, and sustainable healthcare ecosystems. GKSD is committed to elevating healthcare standards, promoting longevity medicine, and improving quality of life through advanced medical care and cutting-edge research.

How does the GCC region—and Saudi Arabia in particular—fit into GKSD’s global strategy?

The GCC region is a central pillar of GKSD’s international strategy, and Saudi Arabia stands out as one of the most dynamic markets in the region. We are the first international private operator investing directly in the Saudi healthcare sector. Our approach is based on creating integrated healthcare ecosystems that combine hospital development, operational management, medical research, and education. The strength of this model comes from the collaboration between GKSD, Gruppo San Donato, Vita-Salute San Raffaele University, and HHH, which together form a unique international healthcare platform. Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 aligns closely with this philosophy. The Kingdom is investing not only in infrastructure but in building a modern, sustainable healthcare system supported by public–private collaboration and international expertise.

How do you see healthcare evolving across the Middle East?

Healthcare across the Middle East is entering a new phase defined by integration, innovation, and patient-centred care.

Artificial intelligence, digital health platforms, and predictive diagnostics are fundamentally reshaping healthcare delivery. However, technology must ultimately serve one purpose: improving patient outcomes and access to care. This also includes integrating longevity-focused care and regenerative medicine into advanced clinical practice, particularly in addressing chronic and age-related conditions. GKSD aims to contribute to this transformation by developing smart hospitals, digital healthcare platforms, and innovation-driven care models supported by the clinical expertise of Gruppo San Donato and the international development capabilities of HHH. At the same time, one of the key challenges facing the region remains the development of human capital. Healthcare transformation requires strong education systems, specialised training, and knowledge transfer.

What defines GKSD’s approach to healthcare development?

GKSD’s healthcare philosophy is built on the integration of hospital management, medical infrastructure development, research, and education. Modern healthcare facilities require strong operational management and clinical governance, while research and innovation ensure that healthcare systems remain at the forefront of medical progress. Our collaboration with Gruppo San Donato is particularly important in this respect. GSD is not only a leading hospital group but also a centre of academic excellence through its universities and research institutions. This integrated model creates healthcare institutions that are not only providers of care but also engines of innovation and knowledge.

What is your market entry and expansion strategy in Saudi Arabia?

GKSD’s approach to international expansion is based on long-term partnerships and alignment with national development priorities.

In Saudi Arabia, we are exploring several avenues, including strategic partnerships, joint ventures, and participation in public–private partnership initiatives. Public–private collaboration is particularly important in the healthcare sector because it allows governments to accelerate infrastructure development while benefiting from international expertise and operational excellence.

What does success look like for GKSD in Saudi Arabia over the next decade?

Looking ahead, success for GKSD in Saudi Arabia over the next five to ten years would mean establishing a strong and trusted presence in the Kingdom through strategic partnerships, advanced healthcare infrastructure, and innovative care models. More importantly, it would mean contributing to Saudi Arabia’s ambition to build one of the most advanced healthcare systems in the world.
